What To Expect At Your Sacramento In-Home Shutter Consultation

March 26, 2019

Before you determine what window treatment to buy, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By taking products to your home, we can show you how different shutters, blinds, and shades would work in your room. This conversation helps you understand your options and helps you feel satisfied with your decision.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how does bringing samples to your home enable you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Different companies may have alternative methods for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will get during your Sunburst consultation.

Detailing A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

A couple choosing between samples of window treatments.

Begin by making an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make a special note to bring you a variety of options available for your preferred choice. We will also bring other options, so you can feel confident that your choice matches your vision.

After we come to your house, we’ll sit down and talk about what you want in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll discuss hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also want to know how the room is used and what aesthetic you are trying to attain. And it’s fine if you don’t know precisely what you want, as we’ll show you multiple options.

You may have to see many different window treatments to discover which treatments match your decor and protects your windows. Most customers need to look at a few different product lines, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or picking the perfect stain to coordinate with the room. We’ll also find all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll take precise measurements of your windows. We will typically measure the windows in each room—even if you only plan to fit treatments for some of your windows. We do this because many of our clients want to be able to order additional shutters or blinds quickly. Finally, we will guide you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no hidden costs on your invoice.

Signs Of A Subpar In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will give you professional in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never experience from any window treatment rep. As they say, the quality of the consultation reflects the quality of the product.

Primarily, your rep should treat your home with respect. The rep should come to your house when promised, clean and presentable, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your consultant should always give you product and company literature and pricing information.

In regards to pricing, you should always get a detailed written quote. Don’t accept a guesstimate, scrawled on a product brochure or the back of a business card. And never accept pricing information before they take any window measurements. You want to know how much product and installation should cost. If a quote ever seems too good to be true, simply ask for references and check the business’ online reviews.
